Read our guide to a truly local Christmas…
The main event:
Whether it’s traditional turkey, a classic goose or an individual partridge, you can pick up some of the finest birds from our local farm shops.
At Brownrigg’s Farm Shop, choose from turkey, geese or chicken, all reared on their farm in Godshill. They also produce their own free range pork, including a range of sausages, traditional pork joints, hams and their own dry cured bacon.
For something a bit different, Briddlesford Lodge Farm produce their own veal as well as a range of award-winning sausages.
A bit on the side:
Not something to be overlooked, vegetables can make or break your Christmas dinner. The freshest, most seasonal produce makes for the most tastiest, so choose local to guarantee the most recently picked. At Farmer Jack’s at Arreton Barns, you can do some present shopping before stocking up on the essentials. Much of the produce is farmed nearby by the owners themselves.
Cheesy does it:
A cheeseboard is a classic festive staple in many homes, bridging the gap between turkey and chocolate! The Island is home to several award-winning varieties, including the famous Isle of Wight Blue from the Isle of Wight Cheese- a winner at The World Cheese Awards. Other varieties for your board include Blue Slipper, Borthwood, Isle of Wight Soft and Gallybagger.
Briddlesford Lodge Farm produce a wide range of cheese in their dairy. Try Cheddar, Caerphilly, Gouda and Halloumi and Feta-style to give your board a Mediterranean feel.
The finale:
Round of the day with a pudding. Choose a traditional Christmas pudding, complete with sixpence, or visit the Island Bakers for some of their legendary mince pies, ready to serve up at home with a dollop of brandy cream.
